Fresh Start Cafe & Bakery is one of the newest coffee shop additions in historic downtown Delaware, Ohio, turning five this spring.
The coffee is good, but the Cafe & Bakery is why you select them over the other options. Fresh baked sweet treats, scones, and large muffins make for a sweet start to the day.
Beginning in early January, Fresh Start added biscuit breakfast sandwiches to the menu from 7 – 10:30 a.m. Options range from a kicked-up ham, egg and swiss to the Not so Granny which features apples, raspberry jam, pickled egg on a hard-boiled egg. I had the classic ($7.95) with Mom Wilson’s country sausage, fried egg, and sharp white cheddar on a made-from-scratch biscuit.
The biscuit was amazing thick and buttery it wasn’t dry at all. And you can’t go wrong with Mom Wilson’s sausage or cheese from The Greater Gouda. My only suggestion is to get it with an over-easy egg to allow the yolk to create a flavor packed condiment for you.
On Monday, Fresh Start launched soups beginning at 10:30 a.m. They featured Signature Oven-Roasted Vegetable which was a rich vegetarian broth with fresh variety of vegetables including butternut squash, kale, and cannellini beans. Topped with asiago cheese (or order no cheese to make it vegan).
The other option was Spicy Southwest Chicken a creamy, cheesy, spicy chicken soup with black beans and corn. There are tomatoes and jalapeno but they are blended smooth – no chunks of those! Topped with sour cream.
The coffee is Columbus-based Crimson Cup and offers a wide-range of drinks you’d expect from a cafe and bakery. But the food is the star of this show.
Fresh Start Cafe & Bakery is located at 24 North Sandusky Street in historic downtown Delaware. The store is open 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. seven days a week.
