Opened by Columbus first fighters, the décor at Firehouse Tavern on the square in Sunbury, Ohio, is simple to figure out.
Nearly every inch of wall and ceiling is covered by a collection of T-shirts from fire departments all over the nation.
Cool decor helps to bring people in but without good food they don’t come back. And Firehouse Tavern has been around long enough to build its own reputation.

On a recent day, I stopped in and had wings and fries. The wings were solid with “back draft” sauce which my server described as a mix of all the other sauces. It was sweet but the “spicy” never appeared for me.
Firehouse Tavern is located at 38 South Vernon Street in Sunbury. The restaurant is open Sunday – Thursday 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.
