The Bishop Backers invite you to save the date for Winter Community Day 2019, a countywide celebration of Delaware that includes free admission to an Ohio Wesleyan University men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader and a Delaware Expo that showcases local nonprofit organizations and businesses.
Winter Community Day 2019 will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, at Ohio Wesleyan’s Branch Rickey Arena and Gordon Field House, 105 S. Sandusky St., Delaware.
Those wishing to have a table at the Delaware Expo are asked to register online now at www.owu.edu/BishopBackers. Registration is free for nonprofit organizations. For-profit businesses are asked to contribute a minimum $10 gift card to be used for event raffles. The registration deadline is Feb. 4.
During the annual Bishop Backers event, both the OWU men’s and women’s basketball teams will take on the Big Red from Denison University, with the women’s game tipping off at 1 p.m. and the men’s game following at 3 p.m. Admission to the doubleheader is free with a canned food or monetary donation that will benefit the Delaware County Hunger Alliance, a United Way of Delaware County initiative.
The Delaware Expo will be open from noon to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 16 and will include giveaways for the first 100 people through the door. It also will feature an indoor children’s play area courtesy of the Delaware Community Center YMCA, a visit from Columbus Zoo animals at 2:15 p.m., a chance to meet OWU athletes, and free raffles for prizes including a big-screen television.
Community Day is intended to bring people together for a free afternoon of entertainment and education, building on the strong sense of cooperation and collaboration that makes Delaware such a great community. The expo also will help businesses and nonprofit organizations to connect with potential customers and volunteers, including Ohio Wesleyan students and alumni.
The Bishop Backers is an organization of community advocates interested in sharing information about OWU athletics and other events at Ohio Wesleyan and in connecting potential student-volunteers, interns, and employees with local organizations.
Ohio Wesleyan University will begin another on Sunday with the lighting of the Ron Hudler Memorial Christmas Tree at Edwards Gymnasium.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with cocoa, cookies and caroling by the University’s OWtsiders performing group. In case of bad weather, the dedication ceremony will be moved to the first-floor lobby of University Hall.
Hudler, a 1956 Ohio Wesleyan graduate, operated one of the nation’s largest Christmas tree farms, along with his three sons, prior to his death earlier this year. Hudler, his son Fred, and farmhand John Miller Jr. were slain in January when they interrupted a robbery at the family’s West Jefferson, N.C., farm.
To honor Hudler’s memory, a 14-foor spruce tree from Hudler Carolina Tree Farms was delivered to campus in October by his son, Dale. The tree decorations, refreshments, and a commemorative plaque are being provided by a gift from Hudler’s twin brother, Don, also a member of OWU’s Class of 1956.
“We are particularly grateful that Ron’s family has chosen to honor his memory by placing one of his beloved trees on the OWU campus,†said university President Rock Jones, Ph.D. “Each year, as the lights come on and we are reminded of the message of hope and peace of the sacred season, we will recall the hope that guided Ron’s life and the goodness he brought to all who were privileged to know him.â€
Hudler Carolina Tree Farms is known throughout the United States as a leader in the industry and was honored in 1995 to be selected to provide the Christmas tree to the White House.
It’s the hottest Internet shopping day of the year.
Which makes it a fitting one to give some props to a good friend of mine and her new venture. Lindsey Gale has started Art By Lenny which features art and cards for the world. There are several local retail establishments that are carrying her line of cards – including the Ohio Wesleyan University Bookstore in Delaware.
Lindsey’s talent is obvious and we wish her the best of luck with this new venture.
Marty Schwalbe, chief strategy officer for Engauge, will present “Engaging and influencing consumers in a marketplace where all the rules have changed” on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Ohio Wesleyan University’s Phillips Hall.
