I have to make an admission, I like pizza. But I’m not in anyway a pizza snob. Lost on me are the battles over Chicago vs. New York; Detroit vs. Sheyboygan. But I know what I like. And I like Amato’s Woodfired Pizza in historic downtown Delaware, Ohio.
So we head to the downtown Delaware location — they also have a location in Mt. Vernon, Ohio — for some classic thin-crust woodfired pizza. “[Our pizzas] are all individually handcrafted and cooked in our woodfired oven in traditional Italian style. Each dough is tossed by hand and topped with our homemade sauces and fresh, all natural ingredients,” it states on the Web site.
I’m a big fan of the fungi pizza which has several different types of mushrooms on the thin crust. Whenever I go it is one of three things that I go between. The other two being the fungi pasta and the anti-pasto salad with homemade blue cheese vinaigrette.
Mrs. Olivia loves the spaghetti and meatballs. Mrs. Toby also likes the anti-pasto salad and several of the pastas and pizzas. One of the few places where her dinner selections is bigger than mine.
They have made the most of the pandemic, adding the igloos to their patio at Sandusky Street and Central Avenue. We have not had the opportunity to use them but based on the wait times to be seated they are a hit and could become a downtown mainstay even post pandemic.
