On this Presidents’ Day we celebrate Delaware, Ohio’s own President Rutherford B. Hayes.
Hayes, the 17th president from 1877-1881, was born in Delaware and met his wife, Lucy Webb, in the city. They spent a majority of their adult life at their home in Fremont, Ohio.
The house that Hayes was born in was demolished at one point and is now a BP Gas Station about a block east of the statue along East William Street. So in 2017, on what would of been Hayes’ 197th-birthday, the 7-foot and 700-pound statue was unveiled. The Rutherford B. Hayes Heritage Fund Committee raised more than $160,000 for the project.
So take a moment and celebrate Delaware’s president tonight.
